Adjusting the sail
“The pessimist complains about the wind.
The optimist expects the it to change.
The leader adjusts the sail."
- John Maxwell
Life is full of unexpected winds—challenges that threaten our progress, setbacks that shake our confidence, and uncertainties that leave us feeling adrift. Some people spend their time complaining, lamenting the difficulties, and wishing circumstances were different. Others sit back, waiting for things to improve on their own, hoping the winds will shift in their favor.
Winds of adversity blow through our ministry as well. When they do, it’s easy to fall into one of two traps: complaining about the struggles (“Why won’t people commit?”) or just hoping things magically improve (“Maybe next year will be different.”).
But great ministry leaders? They adjust the sails.
A leader understands that complaining doesn’t change the wind, and passively hoping won’t move the boat forward. Instead, they take action. They study the conditions, recognize the opportunities within the challenges, and navigate reality with wisdom, courage, and resilience.
The best leaders don’t just survive the storm—they learn how to harness the wind and use it to propel themselves and others forward. Be the kind of leader who refuses to be at the mercy of circumstances. Adjust your sails, and move boldly toward your purpose.
If the winds are strong right now, don’t just brace for impact—adjust the sails. The same God who called you is still guiding the boat. Trust him, shift wisely, and keep moving forward.
