How Might I fail My Team?

Good leaders, no matter the circumstances, often ask themselves…

How might I fail my team?

Here is a list of some of the top ways:

  1. Don’t trust them to make decisions or learn from mistakes. Micromanage.

  2. Seek the imperfections in everything around you except yourself.

  3. Don’t give people tools or processes to follow.

  4. Expect your team to read your mind about what needs to be done and how it needs to look and feel.

  5. Do not recognize and celebrate wins; especially ignore small wins.

  6. Don’t address toxic behavior.

  7. Schedule meetings often, and make them inefficient.

  8. Create a culture of fear.

  9. Create an environment where only a few feel heard.

  10. Make everything urgent.

  11. Do not have regular check-ins or one-on-ones with your team to evaluate how they are feeling and to learn about them.

  12. Do not ask for feedback and try to continuously be a better leader.
