How Might I fail My Team?
Good leaders, no matter the circumstances, often ask themselves…
How might I fail my team?
Here is a list of some of the top ways:
- Don’t trust them to make decisions or learn from mistakes. Micromanage.
- Seek the imperfections in everything around you except yourself.
- Don’t give people tools or processes to follow.
- Expect your team to read your mind about what needs to be done and how it needs to look and feel.
- Do not recognize and celebrate wins; especially ignore small wins.
- Don’t address toxic behavior.
- Schedule meetings often, and make them inefficient.
- Create a culture of fear.
- Create an environment where only a few feel heard.
- Make everything urgent.
- Do not have regular check-ins or one-on-ones with your team to evaluate how they are feeling and to learn about them.
- Do not ask for feedback and try to continuously be a better leader.

 TO CONSIDER:

Here are three discussion questions to help church leaders process this text in a meaningful and engaging way:
- Which of these “failure modes” do you find most tempting as a leader?
- If your team had full permission to add to this list, what do you think they’d say?
- What’s one way you could invite more honest feedback about your leadership this week?
